So you’re getting married. You’ve picked the venue, photographer, caterer, flowers, cake, and approximately 47 other things you didn’t even know you needed.
Now it’s time to pick your DJ.
You jump online and suddenly there are approximately 9,000 DJs within driving distance of your venue. They all have great reviews. They all say they’re “professional.” They all say they “keep the dance floor packed.”
So…
HOW DO YOU ACTUALLY PICK THE RIGHT ONE?!?
Great question. Because here’s the truth:
Not all DJs are the same.
And you’re not just hiring someone to push play. You’re hiring someone to help control the flow, energy, and overall experience of your reception. So here are the things we think actually matter.
DON’T JUST LOOK AT THE PRICE
We know…a DJ company telling you not to make your decision based on price. Hear us out LOL
Obviously, you have a budget. We get it.
But there’s a BIG difference between someone who owns speakers and someone who has years of experience DJing weddings.
You’re paying for:
- Experience
- Preparation
- Equipment
- Backup equipment
- Crowd reading
- Timeline coordination
- Announcements
- Professionalism
- And the ability to handle the unexpected
Because something WILL go wrong. Dinner will run late. Someone will forget where they’re supposed to stand. Your photographer will need “just one more picture.” And Uncle Bob will probably request a song from 1974 while 150 people are destroying the dance floor.
A good DJ knows how to adjust.
MAKE SURE THEY ACTUALLY DJ
This might sound obvious, but there’s a BIG difference between a DJ and someone with a playlist. Anyone can make a playlist. Your DJ should be watching the room. Who’s dancing? What songs are working? What genre just crushed? Do we keep the energy going? Do we change it up?
That’s DJing.
We LOVE when couples give us their must-plays, favorite artists, and songs that mean something to them.
But your playlist should be a road map, not handcuffs.
If the dance floor is packed, you want a DJ who recognizes that and knows how to keep it going.
ASK ABOUT THEIR WEDDING EXPERIENCE

There’s a difference between being a DJ and being a wedding DJ.
Weddings have a LOT going on. Introductions. First dances Toasts. Dinner. Cake cutting. Open dancing. Exits.
And sometimes approximately 14 people who all think they know what happens next.
Your DJ should understand how all of those pieces fit together and, more importantly, how to keep everything moving without making your reception feel like a corporate meeting.
READ THE REVIEWS
Obviously, read the reviews. But don’t just look at the number of stars.
READ WHAT PEOPLE ACTUALLY SAY.
Did they mention the dance floor? Did they talk about communication? Did the DJ help with the timeline? Did they say the DJ was able to adapt? Did they feel comfortable and taken care of? Those details tell you MUCH more than:
“5 stars! Great DJ!”
Look for patterns.
If dozens of couples are talking about the same strengths, there’s probably a reason.
ASK ABOUT BACKUP EQUIPMENT

This isn’t the most exciting question. But it matters.
Speakers break. Microphones stop working. Computers have bad days. Cables mysteriously decide they no longer want to cooperate. Your wedding shouldn’t stop because a piece of equipment decided to have a meltdown.
Ask your DJ:
“What happens if something breaks?”
You want a DJ who has a backup plan BEFORE something goes wrong.
PAY ATTENTION TO HOW THEY COMMUNICATE
This one is HUGE.
How does the DJ communicate with you? Are they listening? Are they asking questions? Are they interested in YOUR wedding?
The better they understand you…the better they can DJ your wedding.
TRUST YOUR GUT
After you’ve read the reviews, watched the videos, compared packages, and talked to a few DJs…
Trust your gut. You’re going to spend a LOT of time with your DJ. You want someone you feel comfortable with. Someone you trust. Someone who listens. Someone who understands that this isn’t just another Saturday night.
Because to you…It’s your wedding.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Stop looking for the “perfect” DJ. Instead, look for the perfect DJ for YOU.
Maybe you want someone super interactive. Maybe you want someone who stays mostly behind the booth. Maybe you want someone who takes a ton of requests. Maybe you want someone who protects your dance floor from those requests.
There’s no single right answer. Your wedding should feel like you.
And your DJ should understand that. At Events Done Right, we work with couples throughout Tampa Bay, Orlando, and Fort Myers to create receptions that feel personal, natural, and FUN.
Because your wedding isn’t a playlist. It’s a party. And your DJ should know the difference.
If you’re searching for your wedding DJ and aren’t sure what questions to ask, let’s talk. That’s what we do at Events Done Right.
